Bone Broth, Bone Health, and Recipe!
You may have all heard by now that excess dairy consumption can actually make our bones weaker and more brittle. In addition, it has been shown that the countries with the highest level of milk consumption have the highest rates of osteoporosis! Besides excess dairy other factors for poor bone health or density include stress (excess cortisol depletes minerals), too many acidic foods (meat, fried foods), and excess caffeine or alcohol consumption.
It’s important to be mindful of the difference of a junk-food diet, vs. a whole foods diet, whether you are vegan or not, as this will make a significant difference in your bone density. Focusing on eating a variety of whole foods, foods that are closest to the earth, and unadulterated, should provide us with everything we need to support healthy bone structure. There is calcium ( and protein for that matter) present in a myriad of different vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds and even fruit!
In addition to calcium there are many other important co-factors to bone health such as vitamin K, vitamin D, boron, selenium and phosphorus to name a few, that can be found in foods such as brazil nuts, bananas, spinach and even brown rice. On top of nutrition, appropriate exercise and stress management are also key to maintaining healthy bones (and a healthy life;)
Bone broth is getting a lot of attention these days in the health world, due the nutritional support it provides. While it’s benefits to the human body may be traditionally known, us vegans are looking for something less…bone-ish..that still supports immunity and healthy bones!
