We don’t know know what to say except a tremendous THANK YOU! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!!
Thank you to the Victoria vegan community for being so generous with their donations and their appetites, and who ate for the animals at RASTA Sanctuary this past Sunday.
Thank you to the amazing performers who shared their art with us, keeping our spirits high and guests entertained throughout the day! Andrea, Mark, and The Harbour Rats!
Of course, the biggest thanks has to go to Andy, the owner of Green Cuisine. Because of his generosity to donate profits from the day to RASTA they will be receiving a cheque for $4000!!!!
After 25yrs of serving up creative and delicious vegan food he is still going strong and deserves to be recognized for his incredible contribution to the community and to RASTA.
Next time you see him running around Green Cuisine thank this dedicated and compassionate individual for everything he has done.
We hope this helps Lucie up at RASTA and all the animals she cares for, but don’t forget they still need more help! So keep those donations coming and spread the word about RASTA’s great work!
Thank You Andy!
Sunshine Coast Veg Fest was an absolute blast thanks to the incredible work of Deb Gleason and Heather Doherty who brought all the great presenters and vendors together. We had loads of vegan fun with our crew from the Victoria vegan community who represented VIVA.
Be sure to check out our interviews below with event co-organizer and vegan coach Deb Gleason, and Gene Baur of Farm Sanctuary. We also have shared Gene Baur’s presentation for everyone to enjoy. Enjoy and share!
Baconalooza -Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C
Activists from Island Animal Liberation (IAL), and Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) will be attending the upcoming event Baconalooza happening May 23rd 2015 at the Velox Rugby Fields.
When VIVA noticed that funds raised from this event would be benefiting The Heart and Stroke Foundation we decided that this was too big of a conflict of interest to ignore. We decided to write to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C to ask them to not accept donations from this event which promotes excess, and harm.
See the letter we sent and their response below.
LETTER SENT FROM VIVA
Hello Janice and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C,
I would like to bring a issue to your attention. Myself and a growing number of people were disturbed to learn that a local event here in Victoria B.C is planning to donate funds raised from their event to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. While the idea is sound, unfortunately this event is plagued with violence and excess that seem to be against the ethical principles and nutritional values of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Baconalooza, organized by Chef Morgan Onda, will take place on May 23rd at the Velox Rugby Fields in Victoria.
See the link below where Morgan references donating to your organization and where he suggests bacon being a health food if you are starving..
Even though the consumption of bacon has unfortunately exploded as fashionable, we are all aware that consuming bacon can raise blood pressure, cholesterol levels and inflammation in the body contributing to atherosclerosis and increasing the risk of a heart disease and stroke. In addition the processing of bacon requires a curing process, of salt, nitrates or other chemicals used to smoke or cure the meat, that can be damaging to our nervous system, immune systems and digestive tract.
As the health risks of consuming high fat, high cholesterol, and high salt animal products are incredibly damaging to your cardiovascular system and otherwise, we feel that there is a conflict of interest in accepting donations from this event. We would like to request that the Heart and Stroke foundation stand by their principles of protecting our hearts and bodies from excess by not accepting donations from Baconalooza.
We will wait to share this letter publicly until we receive your response. Thank you very much for your consideration of maintaining the integrity of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
We appreciate your time
RESPONSE FROM THE HEART AND STROKE FOUNDATION
Thank you for your communication about your organization’s concerns regarding the upcoming Baconalooza event on May 23rd at the Velox Rugby Fields in Victoria.
It recently came to our attention that the event organizers were using the Heart and Stroke Foundation name and logo in association with their event without our knowledge or permission. We understand that the event organizers intended on designating a donation to the Foundation.
We are not affiliated in any way with this event, and requested that the organizers cease further use of the Heart and Stroke Foundation name. We also requested the removal of references to our organization on the event website and promotions. We were pleased to note that this request was complied with in a timely fashion and consider this issue resolved.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation is grateful for the support of thousands of Canadians, organizations and groups in communities across Canada – they are the reason that we are able to create more survivors. The Foundation would also accept donations from groups promoting a balanced, healthy plant based diet.
We thank you for your interest and support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation and our mission of healthy lives free of heart disease and stroke.
