For many people, the reason to be vegan goes no further than the realization that non-human animals are sentient. Animals are often observed seeking comfort, exuding joy and, exhibiting fear. Like us, non human animals have complex nervous systems with pain receptors, the ability to sense danger and know fear. Animals raised for slaughter are confined and brutalized beyond comprehension. In most cases they are unable to act out even their most basic instincts to forage, or clean themselves or nurture familial bonds.
To some, the thought of another animal being born to live a life of suffering, confusion and eventual death simply so we may eat its flesh is unacceptable and enough to abstain from eating animals and their by-products.
Research continues to highlight the correlation between animal consumption and a host of diseases and premature death. Meat consumption is known to raise blood pressure and cholesterol levels, contributing to coronary heart disease, liver disease, diabetes and inflammation. In addition, as animal products increase hormone production, there is an increase of the risk of developing hormonal cancers such as breast and prostate, as well as an increase risk of developing colon or rectal cancers.Furthermore there are multiple studies that suggest vegetarians have a reduced risk in developing cancer and generally live longer more healthful lives. Recognizing the considerable nutritional value of plant foods vs. animal products these types of statistical results make sense.
There is also considerable updated scientific research pointing out the link between dairy consumption, osteoporosis, and poor bone density. North American’s are among the biggest consumers of milk and dairy products and have one of the highest rates of osteoporosis in the world. The dairy industry pays millions annually to convince the public that we will disintegrate without milk or dairy products. This is factually unfounded.
The environmental impacts of animal agriculture are widely known. Almost 50% of the planets surface is used to farm animals, damaging the soil, the air and our water systems beyond repair.
Most people are now aware that animal agriculture is the leading cause of rising greenhouse gases, more than all the transportation in the world combined!! In addition, with 17 billion farm animals in the world (3 X the human population), animal agriculture takes up an enormity of resources.
- 2500 gallons of water are needed to produce only 1lb of beef! That is equivalent to taking a 7 minute shower every day for 6 months! (to produce only 1 lb.)
- According to Nature Conservancy and other environmental groups, the leading cause of rainforest destruction is clearing land to farm animals or their feed-crops,with 1-2 acres being deforested every second! 110 million species of insects, plants and animal species are lost every day in this destruction.
- Oceans are being depleted as you read this with millions of animals being killed and pulled from their polluted habitat, causing ocean dead zones and extinction of species.

Why not Vegetarian?
The horrors of the dairy and egg industry are beginning to surface after undercover investigations have revealed the brutality dairy cows must face in order for us to consume their secretions. Purchasing milk and dairy products necessitates the death and needless cycle of suffering for these animals. Dairy cows are continually artificially inseminated, to ensure adequate milk production. They will carry their calves to term (9 months) and when their baby is born they will not have a chance to know or nuzzle their mother before being whisked away for a life of enslavement, if they are female, or to slaughter, if they are male. When dairy cows milk production become weak, (around 3 years) they are then sent to die in the meat industry. Similarly male chicks are also considered an unwanted by product of the egg industry and are killed and disposed of in unimaginable regard ,upon recognition. Female chicks routinely have their beaks cut off without any sort of antiseptic in order to avoid a cannibalistic pecking of themselves and their neighbors in their tiny battery cages This behaviour is of course abnormal, and often caused by restriction of movements, and terror that cause mental incongruencies.
